“Burn the Books!” – Tea Party Video

Apparently it is video day on Daddy Hogwash…

I haven’t paid much attention to these Tea Parties; however, I was so embarrassed for these people, I had to post this.  There once was a time when we actually wanted intelligent people running this country…I wonder what the Constitution Party guy has to say about African Americans being counted as 3/5’s of a person…

Dan Dennett: Cute, sexy, sweet and funny — an evolutionary riddle : TED Talks

Posted: March 16th, 2009 | Author: karlfrankjr | Filed under: Biology, Culture, Evolution, Humor, Karl Frank Jr., Nature, Parenting, Philosophy, Psychology, Science | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , | Comment Here »

Philosopher Dan Dennett has some interesting thoughts on what makes things cute, sexy, sweet, and funny.  The book on “What is Funny?” is something to look forward too.  I have never really thought about it this way before, but it is quite simple, “Things are sweet because we like it, not, ‘We like it because it is sweet.’”  Make sense?  Just watch…

Is consciousness nothing more than a survival mechanism for the human body’s ecosystem?

Posted: December 2nd, 2008 | Author: karlfrankjr | Filed under: Biology, Karl Frank Jr., Nature, Science | Tags: , , , , , , , , | Comment Here »

I was watching some biology videos on Wired:Science today and came across the video below.  It got me thinking about organism development, specifically, how complicated organisms grow in to being and consciousness.

When you watch this video, you will see a white blood cell actively pursue a piece of bacteria, which is running frantically away from it until the white blood cell prevails.  As I was watching it, I started thinking of the human body as a self-contained ecosystem, or as a large, layered organism.

Since I have not taken any serious biology classes since High School, this may be a, “No Kidding, Karl!” type moment for some readers, and that is partially why I am writing this.  When you think of evolutionary biology, it makes sense that complex organisms would develop one layer, for lack of a better word, at a time, over millions of years.  Or, in simpler terms, from single-celled organisms to conscious human beings, with consciousness and awareness essentially being the most advanced layer of a biological system.

In other words, consciousness is nothing more than the highest level, to date, of protection for the human body, and everything living within it.  It serves a purpose, and that purpose is survival and procreation.  Consciousness increases the organism’s chances of survival, by being aware of its environment, friends, and foes, and procreation creates another container for micro-organisms to exist, perpetuating the process as the complex organism continues to perfect itself over generations to meet the survival requirements of its time.

Does anyone know of any good reading on this topic?  Specifically of the conscious mind being nothing more than a survival mechanism for the ecosystem contained within the human body?
