According to the HuffingtonPost.com, Warren Buffett’s electric car was unveiled in China today, “leapfrogging” larger manufacturers.
SHANGHAI, China — Battery maker turned car company BYD Co. has launched China’s first homegrown hybrid vehicle for the retail market, seeking an edge over its crisis-stricken international rivals.
BYD presented the vehicle, known as the F3DM, in a ceremony in the southern city of Shenzhen, where local officials have pledged to buy some of the cars in support of the project.
The vehicle can run up to 100 kilometers (62 miles) on its electric engine, and when it runs low on power shifts to a back up gasoline engine. Its battery can fully charge in nine hours from a regular electrical outlet, or much faster at BYD’s own charging stations, the company said in a statement.
The car will sell for 149,800 yuan ($22,000), about the same as many Chinese-made mid-sized cars, it said.
While a good portion of America is up in arms of flying shoes, China is taking the lead on America in the Green War.
No, the fossil was not found flying, it was found in a dig. Regardless, that is not what is special about it. Considering that most of human recorded history has happened only over the last couple to few thousand years, it is hard to imagine anything flying in our skies one million years ago, let alone 115 million years ago.
When the numbers get in to the millions and billions, I think it is easy for people to lose perspective on just how long ago that actually is.
(Newser) – Scientists have uncovered a new species of gigantic reptile that flew the skies over Brazil 115 million years ago, the BBC reports. The reptile, by far the largest of its kind ever found, had a wing span of over 16 feet. Lacusovagus—meaning lake wanderer—had a huge jaw, suggesting it tackled especially large prey. It dwarfs similar species found in China.
This is the first in a series of posts on why the Republican Party is faltering, and what it can do to recover. Part I…
As you can tell from the content of this blog, Daddy Hogwash is a bit more liberal minded than conservative in a traditional sense. That being said, I don’t believe conservatism is necessarily a bad thing. Before you bounce off, consider this. Traditional definitions of liberalism and conservatism have never been more jumbled. It does not even appear that most people even know what liberalism and conservatism is any more. Collectively, America, as a country, is much more liberal than China, but more conservative than France.
By definition, liberalism is being open-minded about situations and ideas, but not necessarily acting on them, and conservatism is about tradition, and doing things as they have always done them because it has always worked. (Let me qualify this by saying that I am fully aware that Republicans would have much
Political positions by issue
nastier things to say about the Democrats and vice versa,) It is most constructive to imagine a large circle with liberalism on the left side and conservatism on the right side, balance on the top, and anarchy on the bottom.
For the political novice, Democrats are traditionally considered liberal and Republicans are generally considered conservative. In a nutshell, Liberal Democrats believe that government can do good things for people (civil rights, public education, etc.) and conservative Republicans believe that the less government involvement (taxes and bureaucracy,) the better. However, those are two very large containers, and all walks of life exist between the two. For example, take the issue of homosexuality. Most gays will call themselves liberal Democrats because it is the Democratic Party that seems to represent their interests best. Yet, in the Republican Party there is a faction of gays who call themselves Log Cabin Republicans. Most of the time, they are economic conservatives, and are more conserned with economic issues than they are gay rights.
Outside of that container of liberal and conservative, it has become more and more apparent, especially in the latest election season between Barack Obama and John McCain that there is even a broader difference between the two camps. For those who follow politics closely, the following will be a no-brainer. Just look at the two pictures below and see if you can guess what I am about to say:
While both parties are heavily under-represented by women, there is another glaring difference. The Democrats are a party of diversity and diverse ideas, the Republicans are a party of no
diversity and increasing anti intellectualism. The Democratic Candidates are of all shapes, sizes, sexes, and cultural backgrounds, and the Republican Party is all about six foot, white men.
So, to be a little more direct, the Democratic Party represents diversity, the Republican Party represents the white way or the highway. However, that does not mean that the Democratic Party is all minority and the Republican Party is all Caucasian, but there is an obvious difference, and it is not just with the candidates. It was very much the same at all of the campaign events as well. Just look at the audience during McCain’s RNC speech:
I want to be very careful and say that these are not the only differences between the two parties, or that all the people who make up the two parties are bound by these characterizations, but if you look at the issue differences between the parties, you can see that it pretty much lines up along cultural lines. Admittedly, as a white, middle-class, business owner, I do not fit my own example. That is why I usually try and avoid political labels at all costs. However, as you will see in future postings on this topic, I believe that it is the current manifestation of the Democratic Party that is in possession of the best ideas to solve the problems and challenges of the 21st Century, ultimately benefiting all Americans, regardless of race or socio-economic status.
The Republican Party, on the other-hand, is in an untenable situation. If they are to persist in to the 21st century, they have to realize that our country is in a major change period and they need to break down and reanalyze their entire platform. At the very least, they need to redefine why it is that they feel the way that they do. Because of the growing diversity and maturation of the American people, the Republicans need to redefine themselves in a way that is relevant to the people who go to the voting booth.
What they are doing instead is trying to find new ways to fool people in to following old ideas. For instance, a large portion of the Republican Party is looking at people like the Republican Governor of Louisiana, Bobby Jindal, of Indian decent, as the answer to their woes…as their party’s Obama. What a major strategic mistake that is for them….
Stay tuned for Part II in the Future of the Republican Party series - Why Governor Bobby Jindal is Not The Answer.
I have a hard time believing that Boyah the Pirate will not regret saying what he said in an interview as reported on CNN.com today. The reason that piracy was largely irradicated in the 19th century was because of the strong central power of Japan and the emergence of the Ch’ing dynasty in China. (wwww.pirateinfo.com)
It was not long before piracy was regarded as an international offense, prompting supra-national like efforts to wipe out pirates across the globe. I would be surprised if it took a very long time to wipe out the Somali pirates who apparently think the only way to track a boat is via radar.
“The pirates are living between life and death,” said the pirate leader, identified by only one name, Boyah. “Who can stop them? Americans and British all put together cannot do anything.”
